Fluorite stone is a very ancient crystal that is reputed to be the most colourful of all. It reflects the entire colour spectrum. It is certainly for this reason that it has always been attributed numerous virtues. It’s powerful effects on physical and psychological well-being have been noted. In ancient times, it was considered a ‘third eye’, granting not only rationality, but also intuition. It has seduced men of all eras thanks to the extreme beauty of their colour and incredible variety. Even in ancient times, it was used as a decorative stone. Greeks sculpted it into vases called ‘Murrhins Vases’. Of all sizes, today they are of great value. In the Middle Ages, it was nicknamed ‘Mineral flower’.
It was naturalist Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione who gave the crystal its name in 1797. He derived the name from the Latin ‘fluere’ which means ‘flow’ or ‘flux’ This choice is without doubt related to the fact that this crystal has an extremely low melting point. Fluorite stone is the most important of all natural fluorides. It is found in veins associated with granite rocks. The incredible richness of its colours made it appreciated throughout the ages. This mineral bore other names before being termed Fluorite. It was called ‘Spatum vitreum’ and ‘Calx fluorata.’ In industry and commerce, it is also called Fluospar. It was William H.Bragg who identified its crystallographic structure via X-ray diffraction.
It is a semi-transparent stone, among the brightest that exist. When perfectly pure, it displays no colouration. These elements promote pigmentation and give it its beautiful colours. Its most common shades are green, purple, blue and yellow. Some specimens have two tones and are even multicoloured. Others are exceptional and flatter the eye, changing colour depending on the light level. These characteristics make it a remarkable mineral. Its name comes from the Latin verb ‘fluere’ which means ‘flow’ like flowing water. According to a contemporary legend, the word ‘fluorescence’ comes from the word ‘fluorite.’ This stone has many other names: bruiachite, fluate of lime, chromium-fluorite, calcium fluoride, fluorine, fluorspar, fluor. Fluorite stone is essentially composed of calcium fluoride of the chemical formula CaF2. Fluorite often features traces of organic compounds. They are the origin of the many hues and coloured parts that can be observed on this natural mineral.
Fluorite stone, or CaF2, is used to create many ornamental objects. But it is also used as a flux by steel manufacturers. It is an important chemical component in the manufacturing of fibreglass and opal glass. It should also be noted that it is used to produce hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated product derivatives such as aluminium fluoride. It is from flourite that we obtain aluminium metal. The field of instrumental optics also uses it for its qualities of refraction and chromatic dispersion which are superior to that of regular lenses. Fluorite is found in granite and metamorphic rock mines together with metallic minerals: lead sulphides, zinc and silver. It is also found with baryte, quartz or calcite. Fluorite crystals of all sizes are most often cubic in shape. If not cubic, it can be found in an octahedral shape (two pyramids inverted from the base). More than 9,000 locations around the world contain fluorite deposits. The global supply is of 230 million tonnes. It is divided between South Africa, which has around 41 million tonnes, and Mexico which has 32 million tonnes and China 24 tonnes. The world’s largest producer is China, which until 2010 produced 3 million tonnes per year. This is followed by Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, South Africa, Spain and Namibia.
Fluorite stone protects the psyche. It provides intellectual clarity and ease of concentration. It reduces disorder and instability. It helps to limit learning difficulties. It has a powerful healing power, and can be used to mitigate injuries. It strengthens the venous system, spleen and teeth. It reduces bad cholesterol, lowers blood pressure and eases ailments. It detoxifies the body. It also strengthens the immune defences that protect the body. Each colour has its own characteristics:
