Found in a single region of Russia, charoite is deemed a rare stone. It takes its name from the Chara River, located in the Aldan massif in Russia, a range of peaks that are 800 to 1,000 m high on average. The word ‘chary’ means ‘charm’ or ‘magic’ in Russian. Discovered in 1947, this stone from the silicate group was not documented until much later, in 1978. It can be found on the massif’s metasomatic rocks that form at a temperature of 200 to 250 degrees on average. Charoite stone comes in several shades, from violet to purple to brown. Charoite’s discovery was rather recent and thus there is a lack of history surrounding this stone.
This stone is very attractive thanks to its attractive purple colour. Unfortunately it remains rare due to the limitation of its extraction, particularly as the only Russian region where it is located (Siberia), remains difficult to access and is one of the most hostile environments on Earth. The etymology of the name Charoite, pronounced ‘tcharoite’, comes from the Chara River, in the Republic of Sakha (on Siberian land). The discovery of the stone dates back to the 1940s, however, it was not documented and analysed until 1978. Its recent discovery and rarity mean that there is no historical record or mention of its usage. Today, the stone in its raw form generates a lot of enthusiasm from collectors around the world for its very singular colours. In jewellery, it is considered a semiprecious stone, and is primarily cut in cabochons or carved to make various decorative and ornamental articles.
Charoite stone (pronounced tcharoite) is a mineral in the silicate group and the inosilicates subgroup with formulas K5Ca8 (Si6O15) 2 (Si2O7) Si4O9 (OH)· 3 (H2O). It also has traces of Fe, Al, Mn, Ba and Sr. Charoite is a platy mineral that belongs to the large silicate family, with traces of metals such as barium, aluminium, iron or manganese. Combined with several elements such as potassium or carbon, it forms in calcareous massifs, at high temperatures of 200 to 250 degrees. The colour of the stone can oscillate between purple, violet and brown. It has a monoclinic crystal system, a white streak, as well as a vitreous or in some cases pearly lustre. In terms of density, it is 2.54 to 2.58; its hardness is 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
The stone’s deposits are extremely rare, the most recognised site being in Siberia, not far from Lake Baikal.
Spiritually and psychologically, this monoclinical crystal wards off night terrors and anxieties for deep and restful sleep.
