AMAZONITE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHO THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES

History of Amazonite Stone

Amazonite stone takes its name from the Amazon River where it was discovered. This green stone was honoured by Amazonian warriors and symbolises courage. However, some studies refute this analysis as it is likely that amazonite never existed in this river and it was simply a confusion with another mineral.

Its uses have been well-known since ancient times. Indeed, Amazonite stone was discovered during Antiquity in Egypt, India, Mesopotamia and Sudan. In Egypt, amazonite was used in jewellery (as evidenced by the scarab ring found in the tomb of Tutankhamun) and for its virtues. Part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was engraved on amazonite plaques. In Mesopotamia, amazonite became equally symbolic as it was dedicated to the goddess of the salt sea: Tiamat, the symbol of the chaos of primordial creation. According to the Babylonians, Tiamat was at the origin of everything including other gods, owing to her union with the god of freshwater, Abzû. The Greeks embellished their shields with amazonite for protection as the Amazonian warriors did. Navajo Indians associated this stone with Estsanatlehi, the goddess responsible for humanities’ creation.

Today, amazonite stone is primarily used for its virtues but also in jewellery (as the Egyptians used it) for the crafting of rings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces.

Origin and Composition of Amazonite Stone

Amazonite stone belongs to the feldspars group and is of the microcline variety. It shares the same chemical formula (KAISi3O8) as orthoclase. It’s worth noting that microcline belongs to the triclinic crystalline system and is a low temperature polymorph. As for amazonite, its texture is perlitic. Its green colour is due to its small amount of water and lead.

Ornamentally, amazonite stone can be green, green-blue, blue-green, and either opaque or translucent. This stone is very sensitive to pressure. Until recently, researchers long believed that its colour was due to its copper content. However, recent studies have confirmed the lead and water hypothesis mentioned previously.

Amazonite has several deposits, the most well-known of which are in South Africa, Austria, Brazil, Canada, the United States, Ethiopia, Finland, India and Russia.
